WHY DOES WINDOWS98 TAKES FOREVER TO LOG INTO THE INTERNET?

If you have Windows 98 it does take a while to get online for some unknown reason.
Their is really only one way to speed it up, follow the directions below to do this:

  1. Once you are at the connection screen (the screen that you hit connect on)

  2. Click on the setting button (usually between connect & work offline)

  3. Then Click on the server types tab at the top, and uncheck log on to network.

  4. then click on OK and login. You should notice that it does connect a bit faster

I CAN GO TO ANY TORCHLAKE.COM SITE EVEN SEND EMAIL, BUT CANNOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE

Well there are a few things that could be happening. The one that usually fixes it is that
"use default gateway on remote network" is not checked. To see if this is the case. You
will need to double click on My computer | then double click on dialup networking | then
do a RIGHT mouse click (the other mouse button) on the connection (usually Chain O'
Lakes Internet) then click on properties. Click on the server types tab at the top, then on
TCP/IP settings toward the bottom. Make sure it is these setting are checked or dotted:
Server assigned IP address (dotted)
Server assigned name server addresses (dotted)
Use IP header compression. (checked)
Use default gateway on remote network. (checked)

Press on OK about two to three times so you are out of the dialog boxes and close dialup
networking and my computer and then try getting on and hopefully it will fix your troubles.

WHY CAN'T I CONNECT AT 56K?

1.By its nature, 56k is limited to 53k because of voltage restrictions on the line. It is further limited by the quality of the phone architecture (routers, switch boxes, etc.) in your location. Customers report an average of between 38k and 44k speeds.
2.Although V.90 (the latest 56k standard) is theoretically backward compatible with k56flex and X2, in practice this does not seem to be case. For reliability and speed, upgrade your k56flex or X2 modem to the V.90 standard.
3.Our past experience with 33.6k modem connections in Peachland taught us that connections there weren't on par with everyone else's - and that seems to be the case again with 56k.
4.Because 56k is a new technology, you will likely have to download new modem drivers for it, almost as soon as you get it. The delay from when the modem was made to when it was shipped is long enough for there to be several new revisions. In some cases, you might even have to request for a ROM chip update. Most modem manufactures have been reasonable about this, offering these upgrades and bug fixes free.

WHY DO I ALWAYS GET CUT OFF THE INTERNET?

Dropped connections can occur when there is a sharp decrease in line quality during a call. For instance, a V.34 modem will switch to rates as low as 4800 BPS to compensate for these changes. If the loss of quality is extremely severe, or the modem is unable to recover from an error caused by line noise, the modem will drop the connection.

Line noise that can cause loss of connection is not always noise that is easily noticeable. Pick up your phone, dial a single key except "0". Now listen very close. Do you hear any noise in the line whatsoever? Any noise other than silence, can cause the modem to drop connection randomly. High speed Internet connections require you to have a very clear telephone line. If you experience any of the above symptoms, contact the phone company and have them check the line.  As a warning before calling the phone company they may not come out if it is a Internet Related modem problem.  They only guarantee a 14.4kbps connection

Make sure the phone line that runs from the back of the computer to the phone jack is plugged in and is seated correctly (loud click). A loose line will cause problems getting/staying connected. Replace the phone cord if it doesn't plug in tightly.  Also phone cords can go bad is very old.  If so invest the two dollars or so and get a new telephone cord.

Sometimes regular phone equipment in your house takes line voltage away from your telephone line (example: phones that have no battery, but display the time on a display)  Some phones get power every few minutes off the phone line causing a decrease in line quality during a few second, long enough to cause a disconnection from the internet.  To check and see if this is the case, disconnect all phone equipment, except you computer and try dialing into the internet again.  If that corrects the problem, connect each device one at a time, with checking the internet between every connection of phone equipment, until you find the phone device causing the problems.

Another way to fix this problem is to disable 56k on your modem, to make your modem less picky about line noise.  To do this look on this page: Modem Disconnects.  Also you may want to check out http://www.56k.com for more info on modem related problems.
