Antrim County HFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Home at 2183 Herrick St. in Central Lake has been started. Floor system to be assembled October 13, walls and trusses around October 15. Volunteers are needed.

THE JIMMY CARTER WORK PROJECT REPORT

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God, trust also in me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

—John 14:1-3—

As I read this passage at a dedication on Friday June 24, I got choked up to the point I could not keep speaking.  The scope and magnitude of what we have all contributed to overcame me—all the rooms that had been built, and the families that will now have a place to live—it was just a bit much.

It was my privilege to be able to build at 10 JCWP sites, and visit a number more during June.  It was during these visits that the scope of what we have accomplished hit me.  Here is a summary of the JCWP 2005, “by the numbers:”

1  Former President and his wife participated

1  Catholicose (the top faith leader of the Armenian Church) participated

1  Miss America (in Benton Harbor ) participated

1  Governor and her husband participated

2  US Senators participated

3  Cities visited by the Carters ( Benton Harbor , Detroit & Windsor)

4  Caucuses of State Legislature that participated (House Dems & Repubs; Senate Dems & Repubs)

5  Event wide corporate sponsors: Whirlpool, Masco, Dow, Lowes and Great Lakes Capital Fund

6  JCWP homes built in Windsor Canada

10  Number of homes built in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

12  Number of affiliates that built 5 or more JCWP homes

15  Members of congress from Michigan that participated in JCWP (there are 15 members from Michigan )

16  Affiliates that Blitz built as part of JCWP

18  Departments from the State of Michigan that had employees participate

30  Countries represented by volunteers

50  States represented by volunteers

63  Affiliates that built homes

75  Cities where JCWP homes were built

100  Rocking horses made by DOC inmates (given to families with children under 6 years old)

178  Houses using the Prison Build Program panelized walls

232  Homes built across Michigan

238  Total homes built during JCWP 2005

650  Number of state employees that volunteered on JCWP

1000  Number of people that will move into the JCWP homes within the next month

6500  Sheets of OSB used by Prison Build Program

10,000  Dollars given to each home for downpayment assistance by MSHDA

20,000-25,000  Number of volunteers that worked on a Carter house somewhere in Michigan or Ontario

75,000  Number of studs used to build walls by the Prison Build Program

714,000  Approximate number of volunteer hours to build the homes

9,600,000  Nails driven—one nail for each of the 9.6 million residents of Michigan !

19,500,000  Total dollars raised for JCWP by HFHI, HFHM and the local affiliates

I hope you are encouraged by all the good things (those mentioned above and SO MANY MORE) that happened by putting our FAITH into action.  As you work thru all the details, punch-list items, and closings by July 24—here is my encouragement:  DO NOT LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED.  TRUST IN GOD.  He got us this far.  He will not let us down now—as long as we are diligent and vigilant!

I am convinced that God is smiling broadly at our effort.  May God continue to bless your efforts.

Jerry

The Jimmy Carter Work Project dedicated 238 homes across Michigan & Ontario on June 24, 2005.

GIVING TO ANTRIM COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Did you know that you can give to Antrim County Habitat for Humanity through the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation?

Antrim Habitat set up a fund in 2000 to help fund land purchases. A portion of that fund is an endowment fund. The remainder of that fund is spendable. Both grow through donations, interest and investment income.

Gifts of any size from individuals, families, civic groups and foundations are needed and welcome. They may be made in the form of cash, stock, real estate, bequest or planned gifts.

Also, there is a special annuity program available through the Foundation. Gifts through the foundation may have special tax advantages. For example individuals and businesses making a gift to the endowment may use Michigan's special (GTRCF) community foundation tax credit. The funds at GTRCF are professionally managed in a pooled fund to produce long term growth.

For details on ways to give to Antrim Habitat through the GTRCF contact Susan Sampson, Antrim Habitat Executive Director, at 264-0022 or: Jeanne Snow, Executive Director Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, 250 E. Front Street, Suite 310, Traverse City, MI 49684 (231) 935-4066

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

By Susan Sampson

The Antrim Habitat web site is adding more information. Have you observed the new links to the current newsletter and to the Housing Resource Guide.

We will be using email to notify you of special events, updated information, articles of interest. Send us your email address to be added to our email notification last. Our email address is  antrimhabitat@sbcglobal.net.

Habitat has been blessed with resources to make much happen. God is good.
Every one here at Habitat has high hopes for the future. With God’s help those hopes will become reality.

HIGH SCHOOLS PARTNER WITH HABITAT

Three area high schools, Central Lake, Elk Rapids and Mancelona have worked with Habitat. The Central Lake High School building trades class built the shed for the Ray home in Mancelona. They built it on our trailer and then it was delivered to the site. Elk Rapids Alternative High School Students helped with the move to new office space. Mancelona High School Philanthropy class students helped on site with insulation and then landscaping on two of the homes completed in Mancelona this year.

Habitat has to limit the use of students on our projects due to the limits of the Michigan labor laws, which requires that anyone on construction sites be 18 years of age. A new bill has passed the house which would allow for those that are 16 to volunteer on Habitat house builds. Michigan Habitat has been lobbying for the change and hopes to have the bill passed by the Senate in time for the 2004 building season.

Teachers Gary Johnson, Kathy Breece and Peg Mahaffey were enthusiastically supportive of their students in their work. Thanks to all !

We have many opportunities for individuals and businesses to serve with us. In every community, God seems to have placed people with skills and experience, who are eager to help once a need is made known. Not just carpenters, plumbers and electricians are needed, but people who have organizational skills, who are bankers, Realtors, public speakers; those who can interview, teach, type or telephone, can all find a place of service. There is no age limit. Retired persons as well as students are welcome to help. In addition, the prospective new owners are also expected to give a certain number of hours of their own time to the building of their own or other houses. For more information, please call Susan Sampson, Exec. Director at (231) 264-0022. Fill out and send in the volunteer survey form.

If you, or someone you know is in need of decent, affordable housing, please call our office for more information about the process of applying for Habitat home ownership.

Help us eliminate substandard housing in our community! It's quick, easy and safe to support the house-building, hope-building work of Antrim County HFH through Habitat for Humanity International's secure online donation system. You can even send a gift card announcing your donation in honor of a loved one or a special occasion. Be sure to include Antrim County Habitat for Humanity as the local affiliate.

The Habitat for Humanity International web site contains more information on Habitat's history, mission, volunteer opportunities and contact information for other Habitat affiliates around the world.
